How to browse newspapers in The Social History Archive

The Social History Archive allows newspapers to be browsed by title and issue.

Browsing newspapers in The Social History Archive allows researchers to explore newspaper issues as complete publications, page by page, rather than locating individual articles through keyword search. This approach mirrors the experience of consulting original print newspapers and is particularly valuable when context, layout, and adjacency matter to interpretation.

Finding newspapers to browse

From the main navigation menu, select Newspapers > Browse to view an alphabetical list of all newspaper titles available in the archive. This overview enables you to identify titles relevant to your research by region, period, or publication focus.

You can refine the list by selecting specific titles of interest and applying available newspaper filters to narrow your focus. The front pages shown for each title represent the earliest available issue of that publication within the archive.

Exploring newspaper titles and issues

Selecting a newspaper title takes you to a complete list of issues held for that publication. Issues are listed chronologically by publication date, starting with the earliest available issue, and can be reordered to suit your research needs, including:

  • Publication date (oldest to newest or newest to oldest)
  • Date added to the archive (oldest to newest or newest to oldest)

This flexibility supports both historical sequencing and assessment of digitisation coverage.

Choosing an individual issue opens it for page‑by‑page browsing, allowing you to move through the newspaper from cover to cover. On the final page of an issue, you can proceed directly to the next issue, returning to the front page of the subsequent publication.

Moving between browsing and searching

Browsing and searching are closely connected. If, while browsing, you identify names, events, or themes you wish to investigate further, you can switch directly into newspaper search. Selecting the Search Newspaper option transfers you into the search experience with your currently browsed newspaper titles still selected.

From there, you can continue searching within those titles to preserve contextual focus or widen the search to include additional newspapers as your research question evolves.

Research implications

Browsing supports immersive, contextual reading and often reveals material (such as advertisements, placement decisions, or recurring features) that cannot be captured through keyword searching alone. Combining browsing with targeted searching enables both discovery and systematic analysis, reflecting how newspapers were produced and consumed historically.
