Stop words in The Social History Archive

Short and common words have no discriminatory value in free text search of unstructured text data, so words such as the following are ignored:

an, and, are, as, at, be, but, by, for, if, in, into, is, it, no, not, of, on, or, that, the, their,
then, there, these, they, this, to, was, with

This is common text search index behaviour. These stop words are ignored (as search terms) in all occurrences in the keywords field – both words and phrases.

Note: these stop words may affect the results of phrase search, depending on the  phrase flex setting, as they will be seen and counted as ‘tokens’ (words) when matching a phrase. The words themselves are not being used – but the fact that a word exists in that position in a phrase is considered.
